I tried really hard to write a level-headed review of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game, but it was impossible. I'm such a big fan of the comics, the movie (even though it's not near the level of the comics), and now, the game, that my writing devolved into the language of the fanboy. Everything came out as awesome, wicked, sweet, etc. etc. The thing, though? That's precisely what the game is.

I love that it's an homage to River City Ransom (and about a million other NES and SNES-era games, including a reference to the TMNT arcade game that just about made me wet my pants). I love that it doesn't try to "revolutionize" anything – it's delightfully constructed from the pieces of every other game in the genre. I absolutely adore the score by Anamanaguchi, which might be one of the very best ever. Seriously, check out this song:

I love the look of the game, too, with hyper-detailed pixel-art sprites that match the look and feel of the comics perfectly. Most of all, though, I love how GODDAMNED AWESOME the game is. I can't even think critically about its construction. I'm too invested in Scott Pilgrim (it's Canadian, after all!), in its world, and in the coolness of it all, that to pick apart this thing or that thing feels weird. So I'm not going to. Instead, I'm just going to go play it. And you absolutely should too, especially if you have fond memories of Final Fight.
