Well, it's been a slice.
Two whole years have gone by on Vigigames, and 460 posts, several contributors and many, many words later, I've decided to move on from Vigigames. Maybe my title up top is misleading, though – this is the end of Vigigames in this form, not the end of my video game writing in general.
Basically, here's the thing. I love video games, and I think that clear, intellectual thought about them is incredibly rare. I'm not saying that I was the only person doing this sort of thing, but in the two years since I started this website, I've seen the community of writers talking about video games in a cogent way grow exponentially. And to be entirely frank, I'm feeling a little burnt out. The process of maintaining a website that has articles in any sort of timely fashion has become incredibly difficult thanks to real life, and this is partially due to the size of the games that any video game reviewer is expected to play. A game like Kid Icarus, for example, seems like a pretty straightforward action game, but playing it to any sort of level of completion might require months, not days, and as a full-time employee of a school division, it's difficult to fit that kind of thing into a schedule and still keep abreast of developments in movies, books, the news, etc.
So this is the end of Vigigames, but I couldn't just swear off reviewing entirely. No, I think I just need a new approach to energize myself. Something a lot simpler, a lot broader – something I can do without working at it, you know? Because I still see a lot of movies, read a lot of books, play a lot of video games, watch a lot of news, think about a lot of things. With that in mind, I'm starting up a new blog called "Review Times" (not as in, you know, the New York Times, but more like "Time for Reviews"). I don't want to be pigeonholed into writing about video games for my entire life – I want to talk about other things. I haven't written a music review in years, for example, and that's something I'd like to get back into. Basically, every time I see something or read something or whatever, I'm going to review it. That's obviously still going to include video games, and I still intend on finishing my Year in Zelda/Final Fantasy series, too. Anyways, if you've been a loyal reader of this site, I'd like to thank you so much – writing for such a knowledgeable and intelligent audience is occasionally a little daunting, but incredibly rewarding in the end. And if you're interested in following me on my new site, you can do so at http://reviewtimes.tumblr.com. Thanks! (And archives will be staying up for the forseeable future, too, so feel free to dive into those as well)
