So says EA's John Riccitiello. But of course this is a ludicrous thing to say.
What good exclusives have EA put out on the Wii? Boom Blox? I think that's called "Jenga" where I live. And as for their ports, they're almost always slapdash efforts and why would someone play Need for Speed on the Wii when the experience on the XBox is essentially the same, only prettier?
What Riccitiello wants is for Nintendo's white box to basically have the same audience as the HD consoles, but Nintendo tried that with the Gamecube and it didn't work. That, and EA keeps putting out "me-too" versions of their various, frankly shitty series on the console.
I know that I didn't buy a Wii so I could play EA-style games on it. I bought it for the delightful Nintendo and Nintendo-like exclusives that permeate the system. EA doesn't even try to do this, so why do they expect people to buy their games? And moreover, why do they expect Nintendo to help them out? The only reason why Microsoft is supportive of third parties is because of the type of games they want to push, and also because they're basically irrelevant as first-party developers. EA doesn't spend near the marketing budget on Wii titles that they do on the HD consoles. They're one of the biggest developers in the world, they don't seem to really care about making interesting experiences on the Wii, and they're putting out games on a platform dominated by likely the most consistently great software developer in the world, so it's kind of their own fault if you ask me.
Third parties aren't doomed to failure on the Wii, but the experience needs to be crafted for the Wii's audience – not "hardcore" games, and not knockoffs either, but legitimately well-designed, well-crafted experiences. Frankly, I'm glad that those sorts of standards exist, outside of the slew of really bad casual games that come out and do well based entirely their titles and/or covers (Carnival Games, anyone?). And Nintendo has also shown that they'll support games that fit in well with their systems' modus operandi – see the big push behind Monster Hunter Tri, Dragon Quest IX, or any of the Layton games for proof of that.
I know for a fact that I don't want whatever shit EA is content to pump out on the Wii. There are a ton of great, great third party games on the Wii as it is, and though they might not sell like blockbuster games, they're not really meant to.
So I'll sum it up for you, John: the problem isn't the console, it's your company's mentality. Deal with it.
