The title of The Last Story is almost becoming apocryphal.
"Hey! The Last Story! That sure sounds like Final Fantasy!" As someone who's excited for this game, having to hear that every goddamn two seconds is pretty frustrating. Sorry. Anyways, if you're not aware of this game, it's the new joint from Mistwalker (the company founded by Hironobu Sakaguchi, who somewhat unceremoniously left Square Enix about a decade ago after finishing Final Fantasy X) and Nintendo. For months we've been getting tons of concept art, but here's the first glimpse of the game in action.
My first thoughts are that, a) I wasn't expecting such intense action. It looks to be a really fun action-RPG almost in the vein of Demons Souls (but probably a lot easier), b) I'm a little bit concerned about the lack of colour. Both Nintendo and Sakaguchi are well-known for employing bright, vibrant colours in their games, and this game looks awfully brown. I still hold out hope that colour is being used for specific purposes, and if that last scene in the trailer is anything to go by, that appears to be the exact case.
Square Enix proved with Final Fantasy XIII that the crown for JRPG supremacy is up for the taking – perhaps Sakaguchi is exactly the person to do it. Expect The Last Story to hit Japanese shelves at the end of 2010, and in North America (probably) by early-mid 2011.
