As you may have noticed, I love videogame music. Heck, sometimes I like it even more than regular music. I've been known to listen to Anamanaguchi all day at work, and for an entire month, I probably listened to this mash-up of Jay-Z and the Mako reactor theme from Final Fantasy 7 at least once a day.
Old videogame music for whatever reason seems to lend itself to being really epic backing music for rapping, and I think a lot of my opinions on videogame music have been informed by the fantastic DJ, Team Teamwork. Basically, it's impossible to make a catchy song without, you know, catchy music, and his mash-ups have only cemented in my mind that we're missing out on the striking melodies of the past with all of this emphasis on orchestral bombast.
Over on Team's blog, he's pointed out another project very similar to his own work – Gold 'n Fly takes the music of the classic game Goldeneye on the N64 and mashes it up with rap classics to spectacular results. While the Goldeneye soundtrack isn't one of my absolute favourites, it works really, really well in this context. You should head over here and download before Nintendo or Rare has a C&D placed on the site, as it really is fantastic.
