OK, it's happening again. I'm excited for a Final Fantasy game.
I've been burned so many times. I always really, really want to like a Final Fantasy game, but I haven't yet. I haven't spent enough time with VII to make a judgment call, but playing through VI, which is supposed to be one of the best in the series, didn't do it for me. It felt like Chrono Trigger minus the fun and awesome storyline. I'd rather not talk about IX, which I spent far too long with before finally giving it up.
I know there's no random battles this time, so that's already a huge bonus. But other things that I've read, such as the absence of towns, as well as the fact that about half of the game's running time is made up of cutscenes, give me pause. The biggest issue I have, though, is that the game is coming really close to Uncanny Valley territory. The graphics aren't quite realistic, but they're not quite unrealistic either, leaving the game with these plastic doll-looking characters with dead, dead eyes. Check out the trailer here, and let me know what you think.
And yet, despite this, I know it's a game that I'm going to play the hell out of. Just hopefully not begrudgingly this time.

Though I haven't played too many uncanny valley type games as I've only had my PS3 for 4 months, I think games like Uncharted, inFamous, and GTA IV are quite a bit worse for the dead eyes, from what I can tell. These cats look pretty slick in comparison. I might even consider picking this one up, not having any experience playing Final Fantasy games ever.
On an unrelated note, I just realized that they even have super-slo-mo cameras for olympic curling. That seems like overkill to me.
