What's up with the baditude in videogames?

It's something I'll never get. Not to get all up in John or Christian's faces, because I'm sure there are plenty of games sans baditude on the 360 and PS3, but both consoles are overwhelmed by it. Everything's "dark" and "extreme" and "hardcore." Are they afraid that gamers won't take their games seriously unless they're SERIOUSLY FULL OF BLOOD AND DARKNESS AND RIPPED MUSCLES AND SQUARE JAWS?

Seriously. It's like the fourteen-year-old's version of what dark entertainment is supposed to be like. There are of course a few developers who get it right, making dark masterpieces like BioShock and Fallout 3, but more often than not, it's games like this one that are getting made:

Yay, it's the Legend of Zelda. BUT DARK AND BLOODY AND WITH AN EVIL DUDE! Wow, you've given me so much hope for the future of videogames.

I guess it's a personal preference, but I definitely appreciate games that can pull off deep storylines with maybe a touch of whimsy or even just something well-crafted that's not so bloody dark all the time. No pun(s) intended.
